Understanding Your Bill
Degree Days
Palmetto Electric Cooperative includes Degree Days on members' electric bills. Members can use this information to help explain the fluctuations in their kilowatt hour usage, which directly relates to the amount of their bill. For example, the greater the number of heating degree days, the larger the bill is likely to be, unless, of course, large appliances such as electric heat pumps are completely disengaged.
Degree days are a fairly accurate method of determining the
need for heating and air conditioning. Degree days reflect
the accumulation of daily average temperatures below or above
a 65°F base. For example, if a temperature reading was 60°F
for twenty four hours, that period would be considered a five
(5) heating degree day. If the temperature was 70°F for a
twenty four hour period, that would be considered a five (5)
cooling degree day.
