What is Green Power?
Green power is an environmentally friendly electricity product that is generated from renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and even decomposing garbage in selected landfills.
There are now 3 solar projects across the state – Coastal Carolina University, Technical College of the Lowcountry and Grand Strand Solar Station – and 1 wind turbine in North Myrtle Beach.
Generated by Santee Cooper and distributed by Palmetto Electric Cooperative, South Carolina’s Green Power plant is collecting methane gas at 6 landfills in Horry, Lee, Richland, Anderson, Georgetown and Berkeley counties. There, the methane gases that would normally be released into the atmosphere – gases that possibly contribute to global warming – will be used as “green power” fuel.
