THE 2016 HAMPTON County Watermelon Festival Committee has proudly announced it will honor our brave electric linemen, who often weather uncertain elements and tough conditions to maintain and repair the power lines that keep our communities going. Committee members have declared this year’s Watermelon Festival theme as “Honoring Our Linemen: Those Who Light Up Our County.”
One such lineman, Aron Winn, of Hampton County, will be honored as co-Grand Marshal of the 2016 Watermelon Festival. Winn, 58, has been a lineworker with Palmetto Electric Cooperative for 35 years. Winn stated he is proud to have been named co-Grand Marshal of this year’s festival, and he is excited to participate in the parade ceremonies.
Winn thanks God for protecting him from harm during his 35-year career. He also thanks his wife of 35 years, Teri, for “enduring quite a lot over the years, with me leaving in the middle of the night, often being left alone to take care of our kids and our home when I was called to work out-of-state during large storms.
“I’ve spoken with [fellow] linemen about this year’s theme, and everyone is very appreciative of the Watermelon Festival Committee. We don’t often get this much appreciation, because we are mostly ‘behind the scenes.’ We appreciate the recognition and that our occupation is finally being brought to the forefront,” Winn said.
