Local students participate in Virtual Youth Experience
Congratulations to the six high school sophomores and juniors chosen to represent Palmetto Electric Cooperative on the 2020 Washington Youth Tour (WYT) and Cooperative Youth Summit (CYS). Although these students were not physically able to go to Washington D.C. or Columbia due to COVID-19 restrictions, they did have the opportunity to participate in a one-of-a-kind Virtual Youth Experience, June 19-26.
From the comfort of their own homes, students were able to connect virtually with other students from across the state to learn about cooperatives and how they are handling the COVID-19 crisis and hear from state and national leaders about what is being done in the response to the crisis.
During the Virtual Experience, students were also given the opportunity to earn a $5,000 college scholarship by creating a video or podcast detailing how COVID-19 has impacted their lives.
Nothing can replace the experience of visiting Washington D.C. and Columbia in person, however we hope that by engaging with their government leaders and peers through the Virtual Experience, these students have a better understanding of the history-making pandemic and how we are responding to it. The future is bright, thanks to future leaders like these!
