The WIRE Opportunity Scholarship is awarded to a woman who may not have been able to attend college when she graduated from high school, but now wants to further her education. WIRE (Women Involved in Rural Electrification) awards the scholarship based on financial need and personal goals.
WIRE (Women Involved in Rural Electrification), a women’s organization of Palmetto Electric Cooperative, Inc., will be awarding two $1,000 scholarships in our three-county service area. High School seniors living in southern Beaufort, Jasper or Hampton counties have a shot at the WIRE scholarships, which reward applicants with average or better grades who demonstrate financial need.
The purpose of the Palmetto Electric Trust Scholarship Program is to assist qualified students in pursuit of a post-secondary education who demonstrate a willingness to learn.
Each year, three local high school juniors are chosen to represent Palmetto Electric Cooperative in the Rural Electric Youth Tour, a week long educational trip to Washington, D.C. The Youth Tour gives students a chance to see government in action, visit historical sites and learn all about electric cooperatives.
Three high school juniors and/or sophomores are also chosen to participate in the Cooperative Youth Summit, a four day trip to Columbia, S.C. This trip allows students the opportunity to meet state lawmakers and see how cooperatives are planning for our state’s energy future. Students also have fun by visiting popular attractions like Riverbanks Zoo & Garden.
